| Smart Energy Solutions | |
One component that is creating a lot of interest in the European ‘Smart Energy’ market is the recently released SE2438T (2.4GHz Smart Energy/ZigBee Front End Module). The SE2438T which is placed at the front end of the transceiver (radio module) offers improved range, sensitivity and overall system current consumption at negligible cost. There is a common perception within the industry is that there is no requirement for a ‘front-end’ due to having sufficient power for wireless communication. However, we have worked with numerous leaders in Smart Energy and understand that in actual field trials, the output power achieved at the antenna using the standard radio module solution is not sufficient leading to poor communication & dropped links etc. This may also lead to the addition of costly repeaters (boosters) within the network. Using the SE2438T solves this issue, creating a robust wireless network. Another perception is that adding a component will increase power consumption. Again, this is also not correct. By using the front-end solution (SE2438T) you can actually reduce overall system current. The SE2438T has gain, so this enables you to ‘turn down’ the power of the transceiver (radio module). This results in a more efficient solution and reduced overall current consumption of the whole radio. This leads to increased battery life of the meter. Finally, as the SE2438T replaces some existing external components so the overall BOM cost is neglible. |  |
